When Skin Cancer Returns: Best Practices in Recurrence Management

When skin cancer returns, it can raise new questions and uncertainties—but it also opens the door to informed, proactive care. This 30-minute webinar offers clear, patient-centered guidance on recognizing and managing recurrence in common nonmelanoma skin cancers such as Basal cell carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma. Through a focused and accessible conversation, participants will learn what recurrence means, the signs to watch for, and how treatment and follow-up care are tailored to each individual. Grounded in both clinical expertise and real-world patient experience, this session aims to replace uncertainty with understanding—helping you feel more prepared, supported, and engaged in your ongoing skin health.

Guest: Nikhil Khushalani, MD
Dr. Khushalani is the Vice Chair for the Department of Cutaneous Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. Khushalani’s clinical interest is the development of novel therapeutics for people diagnosed with melanoma and other skin cancers. He is greatly interested in the treatment of uveal melanoma, and melanoma that has metastasized to the brain. Dr. Khushalani is interested in research on angiogenesis in melanoma and the translation of findings into clinical therapeutics. He is studying the economic impact of new melanoma drugs on healthcare (pharmacoeconomics) with an aim to devise strategies to reduce cost. Dr. Khushalani earned his MD from Topiwala National Medical College, University of Bombay, in Maharashtra, India. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, where he also served as Chief Resident. He completed a Medical Oncology Fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 2002. Dr. Khushalani was Assistant Professor of Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and, prior to joining the Moffitt team, was Associate Professor of Medicine at SUNY, Buffalo, where he was the Section Chief of Soft Tissue and Melanoma Medicine, and Director of the IL-2 Program.

About Our Host: Krista Rubin MS, FNP-BC

Krista M. Rubin, RN, MS, FNP-BC, is Chair of the Melanoma Nursing Initiative (MNI), a nurse practitioner in the Center for Melanoma at Massachusetts General Hospital, and AIM at Skin Cancer’s Ask a Skin Cancer Nurse program. She has been involved in the care of patients with melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers for the past 20+ years. She has extensive expertise in the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with both early and late-stage skin cancers. She lectures internationally and has authored numerous articles on the topic of skin cancer. Her area of expertise includes immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and symptom management. Krista is a passionate advocate of sun safety and prevention efforts.
In her clinical practice, Krista provides care to patients receiving immunotherapies, targeted therapies, and various investigational agents with a special interest in recognizing and managing immune-related toxicity.
She has consulted, served on numerous planning committees, and has lectured at local, regional, national, and international conferences. She has authored or co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals on the various aspects of skin cancer treatment and toxicity management.
Krista currently serves as a panel member for the Society of Immunotherapy in Cancer’s (SITC) Cutaneous Melanoma Immunotherapy Guidelines Committee and Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines Oversight Committee.
